A prominent professor of homiletics was once asked by an inquisitive seminarian, "Some people advocate the three-point sermon, others the five-point sermon: how many points do you think a sermon should have?" "At least one," the professor replied.
The rather jaded, but empirically verifiable received wisdom about preachers is that, deep down, we all have one sermon that we preach over and over again. Here's enough evidence for you to judge for yourself. I've posted my 2009 homilies on my "Scholar in Residence" blog at St. Paul's on the Hill; entries are listed according to the Book of Common Prayer lectionary for the year.
